Someoldervehicles(typicallypre-1996modelyear)havelap-
shoulderbeltsystemswhichremainlooseandcannotbelocked
forusewithachildrestraintunlessaseparatelockingsystemis
used.Thesesystemsuseemergencylockingretractors(ELR)
whichlockonlyduringasuddenstoporcrash.Checkyourvehicle
owner’smanualtodeterminewhichtypeofseatbeltsystemisin
eachseatinglocation.Theremaybealabellocatedonthedoor
sideoftheseatbeltwithinstructionsforusewithachildrestraint.
Ifyourvehiclehasanon-lockinglap-shoulderbelt
system,useNon-LockingELRLap-ShoulderBelt
Installationinstructions.
•UseONLY thefullyup-rightpositionwheninstalled
forward-facing.
1.Adjustthechildrestraintintothe
uprightanglepositionbypullingthe
reclineadjusthandleandrotating
theseatbackupright.Checktobe
sureitlocksintoposition.
2.Placethechildrestraintonthe
vehicleseatfacingforward.Fully
extendtheseatbeltwhileholding
thelapandshouldersections
together.

DEATH or SERIOUS INJURY
can occur
3.Makingsuretheseatbeltis
nottwisted,routetheseatbelt
throughtheforward-facing
beltpath,thenbuckleseatbelt.
4.Openthebeltlockoffandroute
theshouldersectionoftheseat
beltupintotheslot.
5.Whilepressingononearmrestof
thechildrestraint,removeslack
fromshoulderbelt.Tohelp
securelytighten,pressdownon
theotherarmrestandremove
anyremainingslackfromthe
seatbelt.
Repeatasneededuntilthe
childrestraintcannotbemoved
morethanone inch (2.5 cm)in
anydirectioninthebeltpath.
6.Closethebeltlockoffoverthe
shoulderbeltbypressingthe
armdownontothewebbing
andclosethehandle.
7.Ifyourvehiclehasatoptether
anchor,attachandtighten
thetoptetherasshownon
page39.
